PRESS RELEASE - El Museo Reina Sofía presenta el ciclo Propuesta para un archivo de vídeo que muestra, a lo largo de cuatro sesiones temáticas, diferentes piezas audiovisuales experimentales seleccionadas en la convocatoria Hamaca-Museo Reina Sofía 2017, llamamiento público bianual surgido de la colaboración entre el Museo y la distribuidora Hamaca, especializada en videoarte y artes electrónicas. New Yorker profile on video artist Ryan Trecartin

I think Trecartin is the most exciting video artist at work now, keeping aflame the ethos of video as a true condensation of the electronic apparatus. In his case, the internet is present in the speed and imagery overload that makes his videos simultaneously outlandish and familiar. 

 The New Yorker has published an in-depth interview with Trecartin, confirming his increasing reputation in the art world. Below is one of his first video tapes, A Family Finds Entertainment.

Arab videoart

Since the 1960s and advancement of technology, video art has taken a prominent route to becoming a fundamental contemporary art medium. With a growing number of international and Arab artists expressing their views, Athr Gallery is proud to present Video(works), a distinctive exhibition in that it celebrates the medium of video art rather than a specific theme or topic.

 Video(works) is an elaborate introduction to video art for the region, showcasing artworks by the likes of Ahmed Mater and his unique camera view of Jamrat (the stone throwing ritual in Hajj), Ziad Antar’s short art/documentary on the 2006’s war in Lebanon with a mixture of sounds and visuals, and Adel Abidin’s commentary on war and pop culture, next to Hans Op De Beeck’s architectural video masterpiece “Staging Silence 2”, David Zink Yi’s street dance performance and Sami Alturki’s protest on overwhelming advertising billboards in the region.

DAVID HOCKNEY's video installation THE JUGGLERS

This exhibition marks the U.S. premiere of David Hockney’s first video installation: The Jugglers, June 24th 2012 (2012). Filmed using eighteen fixed cameras, this multiscreen tableau shows a group of jugglers as they move in a procession across a grid of eighteen screens. The figures, dressed in black and juggling brightly colored objects, perform in front of a pink wall and on a blue floor, creating a vibrant, colorful composition whose energy is echoed by a lively musical soundtrack. Hockney’s creation of a composite image from multiple perspectives places the choice of where to look with the viewer, demonstrating his ongoing interest in how technologies can open up new ways of looking at, and making, images.

Ten Years of Madrid Abierto: Conference 2001-2012

Within its ten years of existence, along six editions, the international program Madrid Abierto has produced 65 artistic interventions. In its different editions, specific sections on audiovisual and sound-works, discussions panels, presentations and workshops have been made as well.

All the documentation materials generated therein compose the Madrid Abierto's archive established in Matadero during 2011, which will be made accessible from January 12th to February 19th within the framework of the exhibition at El Taller, including the artworks by, amongst others, Santiago Sierra, Dan Perjovschi, Laurence Bonvin, Simon Greenan + Christopher Sperandio, Wolfgang Weileder and Raimond Chaves. From January 12th to February 19th it will also take place at El Taller, in Matadero, presentations and discussions with Fernando Llanos, Iñaki Larrimbe, Democracia, Susanne Bosch, Raquel Pelta and Aitor Méndez.

A Video Art Exhibition: Membajak TV

"Television – that are controlled by political forces and corporations-have shaped and construct reality, behavioral and the cultural identity of the community so that later generations came interpret in various ways: to create a range of cultural awareness, that question, tease, criticize, intervene, reflect, and even offer solutions.

The emergence of a new generation of video makers are showing a close link between technological progress with the culture of television media in Indonesia through three main points: technological developments, the political history of the relations of television information with the development of video art, and the emergence of video works of generations of makers who are under 30 years-which are a generation that has been fostered by the television culture. The cultural position that these video-makers act are contrary to the community groups that make sense of television technology solely as a consumer, entertainment, or lifestyle.

As the survey and mapping works of video, The Video Art Exhibition is hoping to provide data, information, and inspiration to the general public about strategies to coexist with the technologies in a healthy medium of television, as well as understand the eyes of the chain with political power and corporate / market .

Salihara with this Video Art Exhibition “Membajak TV” features video works from a number of artists created in the period 1998 (post-Reformation) until 2010, through the selection and curation process undertaken by artists and observers of new media, Krisna Murti.

The artists who participated in this exhibition are Anggun Priambodo, Lenteng Forum, Henry Foundation, HONF (House of Natural Fiber), Irwan Ahmett, Jompet Kuswidananto, Jasmine Suryodarmo, Muhammad Akbar, Nanang R. Hidayat, Prilla Tania, Reza Afisina (Asung), Tintin Wulia, Tromarama, Wimo Ambala Bayang and Yusuf Ismail."

With the presence of artists and filmmakers from all over the world, the Rencontres Internationales will propose an unprecedented programme gathering 150 works from Spain, France, Germany and 40 other countries, works by artists and filmmakers internationally renowned and young artists shown for the first time in Madrid. With many films premieres, a video program, an exhibition, a forum with debates and panel discussions.
