All the documentation materials generated therein compose the Madrid Abierto's archive established in Matadero during 2011, which will be made accessible from January 12th to February 19th within the framework of the exhibition at El Taller, including the artworks by, amongst others, Santiago Sierra, Dan Perjovschi, Laurence Bonvin, Simon Greenan + Christopher Sperandio, Wolfgang Weileder and Raimond Chaves. From January 12th to February 19th it will also take place at El Taller, in Matadero, presentations and discussions with Fernando Llanos, Iñaki Larrimbe, Democracia, Susanne Bosch, Raquel Pelta and Aitor Méndez.

"Television – that are controlled by political forces and corporations-have shaped and construct reality, behavioral and the cultural identity of the community so that later generations came interpret in various ways: to create a range of cultural awareness, that question, tease, criticize, intervene, reflect, and even offer solutions.

The emergence of a new generation of video makers are showing a close link between technological progress with the culture of television media in Indonesia through three main points: technological developments, the political history of the relations of television information with the development of video art, and the emergence of video works of generations of makers who are under 30 years-which are a generation that has been fostered by the television culture. The cultural position that these video-makers act are contrary to the community groups that make sense of television technology solely as a consumer, entertainment, or lifestyle.

As the survey and mapping works of video, The Video Art Exhibition is hoping to provide data, information, and inspiration to the general public about strategies to coexist with the technologies in a healthy medium of television, as well as understand the eyes of the chain with political power and corporate / market .

In early November 1982 a new television channel was launched in the UK that transformed British video art. Channel 4 was unlike the other three channels then available to UK audiences: two of these (BBC1, BBC2) were cast in a socially conservative and patriarchal mould of educating the public (an impulse little changed since the days of John Reith, the BBC's first Director-General in the 1920s), while the third (ITV) was a purely commercial enterprise. Channel 4 was established following a parliamentary bill that aimed to open up broadcasting to minority groups and, separately, to encourage independent experimental film and video production. Among the programmes created in this early experimental period was Stuart Marshall's Bright Eyes (1984), one of the first full-length documentaries to confront AIDS and the media hysteria surrounding it. GARY HILL, WALL PIECE

Since the first works that he created in the early 1970s, a large part of Gary Hill’s work has consisted of performances in which the artist acted either directly or through film recordings, mixing voice, words, various sounds emitted by him or proceeding from objects and equipment, thereby creating what to date is less a work of video art (although it belongs historically to this area) than a work of sound poetry or even of body poetry, since, on countless occasions, the artist’s body is involved in the pieces as matter and material.

In Wall Piece, Gary Hill repeatedly flings his own body against a wall while pronouncing each time some words which end up forming a complete text. His body is simultaneously matter and sound and visual material as well as an invisible shape that is hidden in the darkness in order to appear suddenly in a luminous flash. We do not know whether it is his body that produces the images that appear, or his voice that triggers the light, or the sound of his body against the wall that gives rise to this whole atmosphere. It is clear that an obvious link exists between the verbal, the vocal, the visual, and the corporeal, but after a while we realise that these elements lose focus and separate in order to recompose themselves and come apart again. The performance does not lie only in the installation that we are experiencing or in the film actions: it is also in our perception, which attempts to bring together what was swiftly disconnected and re-tie the thread of loose words. As in certain other works by Gary Hill, Wall Piece is a work that deals with dissociative perception and the way that we must associate the diverse elements of language, image and body in order for perception to exist.

The impact of the former division of Central and Eastern Europe on the balance of societies, in this video program, is reconsidered as a metaphor for dichotomies, separations and alienations which can be found in palpable and impalpable forms in our lives throughout the globe. As our human society grows in complexity, histories and relationships are buried under the myriad of information and one can loose track of divisions which exist within the everyday. The Artist's role in the midst of this is to reveal, through associations of image and concepts, unidentified or forgotten truths or contradictions. The group of artists chosen for this program each touch through their work on questions of boundaries whether they be within the realm of identity, physical endurance, aesthetics, social interaction, political positioning or geographical predetermination. Through delicate or bold strokes they re-represent chasms within our state of being, seeking to reveal or mend the differences which echo or stem from the divisions found within Europe in the last century, and within human relations as a whole.

The international exhibition project entitled "Erased Walls" has been planned as a three-part project for presentation in Poland (Poznan: 11 Sept. – 30 Oct. 2010), Germany (Berlin: 7 – 30 October 2010) and Slovakia (Bratislava: 4 – 30 Nov. 2010).

After opening at the "Mediations Biennale Poznan 2010" (Poland), this highly acclaimed exhibition project is now coming to Berlin at "ConcentArt e.V. – A Space for Projects and Exhibitions". The project is supported by the EU's Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). In addition, as an extension of the exhibition “Erased walls” in Poznan, ConcentArt in Berlin-Kreuzberg is showing the video screenings, video installations, objects of 55 international artists to this theme. The video medium in its ambivalent function – on the one hand as a seemingly neutral documentation of reality, on the other with the option of taking up a personal, creative position and viewpoint on reality – is at the heart of this exhibition. This enables the artists to take a stance on the current situation in Europe: an association of states where physical walls have been destroyed and simultaneously replaced by invisible ones. In their works the artists reflect on stereotypes of Europe's image, such as self-reflexivity, plurality, tolerance or liberal democracy, achievements which Europe can be proud of and which have become common property. So there are good reasons to insist on the specificity and the magic of European culture, even if much of it needs to be put into perspective. New realities are emerging – caused by global changes via modern communications, by growing rivalries between the countries of "old" Europe and the "new" Europe that was formerly excluded from the distribution of wealth and now wants to participate in consumption. No resources are spared to achieve this objective. In addition, an intensification of financial "cannibalism" in the wake of the current financial crisis is leading to even greater disparities between rich and poor. This reinforces xenophobia and intolerance. As a result, hollow pronouncements on reconciling economic growth with social inclusion, cultural self-will with profit remain – like most other pronouncements – unfulfilled, at least up until now. The illusion of progress in the fields of communication and innovation is total, and the accelerated merry-go-round of values and standards continues against a backdrop of bottomless inequality.

After completing its first decade, the change that the Barcelona Art Contemporary Festival had been predicting has arrived. An innovative change, as perceptible as it is intangible, BAC! Enters the 4th dimension: TIME.

In a period in which different artistic, scientific, philosophical and technological disciplines interact freely, finding, creating and dissociating as part of an uncontrollable ritual dance, TIME is introduced as a brush that captivates an increasing number of art lovers, both emissaries and receivers.

TIME, divine mystery and mortal fear par excellence, becomes an active part in the world of perceptions, multiplying the artistic experience through incalculable visual impacts which choreograph a lasting sensation. Audiovisuals enter the artistic sphere with a sweeping momentum. Gone are its difficult beginnings, when a few pioneers knocked themselves out creating a vanguard of moving images that was hardly taken into account.

Only after this ordeal, a collective consciousness arises, having digested this evolution and, not even the most conservative can any longer contain the overwhelming expansion of one of the most contemporary means of expression. A means which is not only able to sublimate all the senses, but also adds a dimension of vital importance that demands our attention: TIME. Professional artists and enthusiastic amateurs investigate this new set of brushes and paints, relying on technology without prejudice and bravely accepting today's challenges.

The latest BAC! presents the special relationship of art with the space-time binomial, promoting the infinite, simultaneously occurring combinations of the multidimensional nature of such work : Time-based Art.

A complexity that is expressed in the human experience as such, and through the interaction of all these forces creates the ethereal dimension, TIME. With the visitors' interaction and their own space and time, the show will provide the approach to the binomial with infinite permutations.

The fourth dimension is defined as a simultaneous, massive, metaphorical, and deeply intertwined with life experience. It is a dimension that contains movement, the object of numerous art historical investigations and the axis of art movements and disciplines as important as cubism, futurism, kinetic art, comics, film and, of course, video art.

Within this historic and universal fasc ination with exploring the space-time continuum, BAC! takes revisits the invited country context, presented in previous editions. JAPAN will be the guest country in this next edition, selected for its innovative artistic proposals and researches.

Within this framework, BAC! Begins the new decade inviting us to explore notions of space and time using today's most advanced artistic technologies, allowing to discover virtuous talents working with the genres that intrinsically employ TIME in the palette. With the support of specialists from the different forms of that audiovisual creativity takes nowadays, BAC! will take the plunge of overviewing them under an artistic approach.

Respecting the broadly open conceptual line that characterizes BAC!'s previous editions, this year, the proposal is even more emphatic, with a quest to reflect together on the di fferent ways in which the time dimension itself affects human existence.

Time does not stop or repeat itself, it is intrinsically linked to change. Welcome to the art of the fourth dimension.

The call for participations opens on Thursday 1st of July 2010 and closes on Tuesday 7th of September 2010.

SELECTION

The highly determinant factors would be:

- Artistic quality of the proposal and its presentation

- Plastic abilities and research with digital and analogical mediums

- Reference of the proposal to the suggested theme

- If not finished yet, viability of the proposal

JURY

Organization and chief curator will make the first selection of the proposals received. The curator responsible of each section from the Festival would make the final selection. Jury selection would be final.

RESULTS

Final results will be published in BAC! website: www.lasanta.org, as well as a nnounced through a VideoArtWorld Bulletin, at the end of September 2010. Once published the organization will contact each artist to inform about the following steps to follow.

This month's 'Critical Cinema presents...' brings us a wonderful selection
of work from six Rio de Janeiro based video artists.

The Spirit of Rio (Simone Michelin, 2007)
The video is an aleatory and dream-like documentary of events that
occurred in Rio de Janeiro from 2004 to 2007. A meta-narrative, the film
comments in its proper constitution as documentary while it refers to art
history and to the role of the image in the constitution of what we
consider reality.

Insertion II, Insertion III (Aleteia Daneluz, 2009 - 2010)
A series of work in development in which the artist uses her body to
experience various spaces and landscapes

War Games (Bob N and Moises Alcuna, 2009)
In 2009 Bob N and Moises Alcuna compounded pre-existing projects and
produced a video that recreates the original painting Jogos de Guerra (War
Games).

Untitled (Bruna Lobo, 2008)
The film depicts the making of a human sculpture from clay and the process
of dissolving it in water

Red Landscapes (Evandro Machado, 2008)
The imaginary landscape of this
stop motion animation was created using paper scraps from Machado's
studio.

17TH VIDEOBRASIL BROADENS FOCUS AND BECOMES INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVAL

Enrolment is open for the 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil, due September 2011 with a new name and significant structural changes from the previous editions. The Southern Panoramas Competitive Exhibition, previously restricted to video works, is now accepting other artistic experiments, such as installations, performance, and book-objects or artist books—artwork that uses printed media or publications intended to be works of art. The new competition expands its ability to encompass diverse manifestations, including those that depart from the single-channel format.

Detailed in the Regulations and Entry Forms published here, the new change in the model of Videobrasil seeks to align the Festival with the nature of contemporary art practices, to meet the demands of political-cultural debate, and to confront the huge output of representations that constitutes the territory of visuality in the world today. It gives Videobrasil a never-before-seen format, making it the country’s first contemporary art festival.

The 1st Videobrasil Open Studio Prize underscores the propositional character of the International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil. Created for this edition, the Prize will select young artists from the city of São Paulo to produce artwork in collaboration at Casa Tomada, a local facility for production, reflection, and interaction. The works will be exhibited in the 17th Festival, as part of the Southern Panoramas exhibition. Enrolment for the Prize will remain open until October 29, 2010.

Artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania may submit works for the Southern Panoramas Competitive Exhibition by March 10, 2011. Those in the shortlist, to be announced in June 2011, will compete for a Grand Prize of forty-five thousand Brazilian reais (roughly US$25,000 at current exchange rates) cash, and eight artist residency prizes, to be granted in partnership with institutions in Brazil, Asia, Europe, and South America.

The 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil is promoted by SESC São Paulo and Associação Cultural Videobrasil. The two organizations promoted the Brazilian tour of the Sophie Calle – Cuide de você (2009) exhibition, and are now preparing the Joseph Beuys – We Are the Revolution (São Paulo/Salvador) exhibition for September 2010.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel is an epic video art trilogy about the human condition, including seminal works by 30 international emerging artists chosen based on an open call from over 200 submissions.

The concept of life, death and rebirth has followed humanity through the ages as the self and the collective whole passes through time, creating a relative chain of events that could be called the history of universal human experience. Its through all of these varying histories, and a perpetual creative avant garde that continue to seek a move vivid understanding of the interconnectedness of life. Our great quest to solve the questions of our age could be exemplified by one of humankinds greatest achievements at CERN Labs, Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, the worlds largest machine. As the scientists at CERN continue to probe the most fundamental questions of life and the origins of the universe, we seek artists that are asking similar big questions in their creative practice and use their creativity to reveal the world in new and unexpected ways.

About the Curator
Lee Wells is an artist, independent curator and consultant currently living and working in New York. His artwork and projects primarily question systems of power and control and have been exhibited internationally for over 15 years, including the 51 st La Biennale Di Venezia, National Center for Contemporary Art Moscow, Kimpo International Airport, WRO07 XII Media Biennial, PS1/MoMA, Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, and Hermitage Museum in addition to numerous art fairs, festivals and galleries. He is a co-founder and director of IFAC-arts, an alternative curitorial program and nomadic gallery and since 2006, a co-founder of [PAM] the Perpetual Art Machine and has been a SCOPE Curator at Large since 2005. www.leewells.org

If you're lucky enough to be in New York between May 15–October 4, 2010, check out this season of Deren movies. Deren's cinema and vision is essential for anyone interested in film as art as well as video art. The text below is from MoMA's website.

"Maya Deren (American, 1917–1961) was a visionary of American experimental film in the 1940s and 1950s. A precocious student, she studied poetry and literature at New York University and Smith College, where she became interested in the arts. While working for modern-dance choreographer Katherine Dunham, Deren met her future husband, filmmaker Alexander Hammid, who introduced her to European avant-garde film. In 1943, the couple collaborated on the short film Meshes of the Afternoon, which has since become one of the most widely influential films of the American experimental-film movement.

Deren, who received the first Guggenheim Foundation grant for “creative work in the field of motion pictures” and formed the Creative Film Foundation to broaden support for experimental film, continued making and self-distributing her own films and lecturing and writing about avant-garde cinema theory until her untimely death at the age of forty-four. Her pioneering formal innovations—performing in front of the camera, using semiautobiographical content, and meshing literary, psychological, and ethnographic disciplines with rigorous technique—inspired future generations of experimental filmmakers.

This exhibition, which consists of a video installation in the Theater Galleries and short-film programs in the theaters, examines Deren’s legacy through both her own work and that of a trio of women directors upon whom she had an indelible influence: Carolee Schneemann, Barbara Hammer, and Su Friedrich.

Organized by Sally Berger, Assistant Curator, Department of Film. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with MoMA’s publication of Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (June 2010)."

REWIND + PLAY presents a selection of key works from the first decade of artists’ video practice in the UK. Work of that period is characterised by self-reflexivity in the medium, by an investigation of the limits of the then-new technology and by opposition to the dominant video form of the time: broadcast television. With the notable exception of David Hall’s TV Interruptions, first shown unannounced on Scottish television in 1971, the works in this selection were made for gallery exhibition.

Before the advent of video projectors, work was produced and displayed using TV monitors, and the ‘box’ was recognised by some artists as an inevitable sculptural context that influenced the making and reading of their work. This was especially so in works which referenced television or were actually made for broadcast. Tamara Krikorian’s Vanitas (1977) and David Hall’s TV Interruptions (1971) are screened on a TV monitor for this reason.

Most of the work was produced or shown around two key exhibitions of the period – The Video Show at the Serpentine Gallery in May 1975 and a video installation show at the Tate Gallery in 1976 – and disseminated through the artist-run video distributor London Video Arts which was established in 1976.

This selection is drawn from the DVD publication Rewind + Play: An Anthology of Early British Video Art published in 2009 by LUX, the artists’ moving image agency, in association with REWIND: Artists’ video in the 70s and 80s. Available from the LUX Shop.

Recalling Klein's use of 'IKB' — International Klein Blue or chroma-key blue — they revisit their own performance of XXX blue, 1984, at Centre d'art Contemporain in Geneva, where the artists painted large Xs using stuffed poodles dipped in blue paint. The video reveals the meaning of language and iconography in their work, and provides some background for their choice of poodles as mascot and metaphor. As Felix Partz comments: 'Those who live to please, must please to live.'

In Shut the Fuck Up, General Idea underline the media's insistence that only gossip and spectacle make art and artists interesting to the public. On the contrary, General Idea point out, artists are no fools, nor do they operate within "a passive yet cleverly deceitful, alienated cult of the imbecile.' Jorge Zontal has the last word: 'When there is nothing to say, shut the fuck up.'"

Television Delivers People (Richard Serra, 1973)

I don't normally use this blog to report about video art exhibitions, but I decided to make an exception for the Television Delivers People show currently playing at the Whitney Museum in New York until 17 February.

"Television Delivers People brings together single-channel video works from the 1970s to the present that examine how an individual viewer is shaped by television's structure and content. These videos also suggest the possibility of an active approach to viewing which remains relevant even as the physical experience of viewing changes. The exhibition takes its title from Richard Serra's video Television Delivers People (1973, playing above), which pairs a Muzak soundtrack with a scrolling list of statements describing the manipulative strategies and motivations of corporate advertisers imbedded in television. Works from the late 1970s and early '80s by Dara Birnbaum and Joan Braderman extend Serra's media critique by using strategies of appropriation to deconstruct specific television genres and programs. Videos by Michael Smith and Alex Bag adopt a performative approach in responding to television, acting out characters whose lives are shaped by cable and its endless programming choices. The exhibition also includes videos by a number of young artists who have created experimental narratives reflective of a dense internet culture, where diverse content from television, film, and music is immediately accessible and available for manipulation and response. Using footage sampled from the opening sequence of a 1977 Brazilian soap opera, Video Graffiti is a symbolic gesture of cultural re-appropriation. The video consists of the author 'graffiting' his name on top of the credits that appear in the sequence as an act of 'vandalism' against Brazil's controlling Globo Network and the powerful cultural colonization imposed by the organisation on the making of the country's collective memory.

BRASIL REDUX (2006, 10'32", cor) is almost a ready-made that uses a publicity film about Brazil from 1948 as primary text. The video consists of the film being played backwards with additional sound that alludes to a machine's meltdown. For the author, the video is a meditation on the lost dream of Brazil as the country of the future, with the fading celluloid images presented in the documentary as a representation of nostalgia for a future that never was and never will be.

Cat Silence, Dog Sound (Mini-DV, colour, 1'30", 2006) is a record of a spontaneous domestic scene, the confrontation between a cat and dog recontextualised as an illustration of how sound changes the meaning when added on a sequence. The cat represents the power of the silent image while the dog's nervous barking makes an allusion to the manipulative use of sound and how it is used to direct view point.

Director's statement:

"This video came out of an idea to produce tapes based on improvisation and elements of performance art. I got some inspiration from vintage direct cinema and the improvised cinema of Paul Morrissey and Jim McBride. I wanted to explore some ideas quite literally on the screen, hence the use of graphics to make an allusion to 1960s sloganism and the Novelle Vague-ish idea of capitalist work relations as a form of prostitution. I also wanted to touch on contemporary issues such as globalisation, corporate and celebrity culture. I've always been fascinated by the interview format, including job interviews, and I thought it could also be used as a way to reflect on the role of the director in a film or video by turning the camera (and therefore the viewer) into a non-diegetic character."

I am a Brazilian-Italian video artist/film writer/journalist based in London between 1996 and 2009. I currently reside in Brazil. I hold an MA in film and television studies from the University of Westminster, London. My video work focuses on performance, media critique, automatic writing and I'm influenced by early video art, alternative television, Dada, Pop, Surrealism and avant-garde cinema in general.

I am also a curator and my most recent work was a series of Brazilian video art called VIDEO LINKS BRAZIL presented at the Starr Auditorium at the Tate Modern in London between 23 and 25 March 2007. Funded by the Arts Council of England. The programme was also presented at Museu Victor Meirelles in Florianópolis, Brazil, between 29 and 31 October 2007. In 2008 I co-curated the Hollywood-based video festival Freewaves.

Curating

In 2008 I co-curated the Hollywood-based video festival Freewaves. I organised and curated a season of Brazilian video art shown at the Tate Modern, London, between 23 and 25 March 2007. I also curated a programme of short films for the Latin American Film Festival in London in late November 2006.

Writing/film criticism

I was the editor of the independent, London-based film salon Kamera.co.uk, one of the longest-running film sites on the web, between December 2005 and December 2008. My work has been published by Time Out London, Observer News Service, New York Arts magazine, Blue (Australia), ArtKrush.com, popmatters.com, among others. I was the arts editor of AXM magazine (London) between 1997 and 2001. I contributed a short story to the Gay Times New Century, New Writing anthology of new UK queer fiction (2000) and I pusblished my first Portuguese language novel, A Ida, in Rio de Janeiro (on 7Letras) in October 2007.
